History of GOMCO

Description

In the 1950's the state of Patiala was part of PEPSU, under the patronage of the then Raj Pramukh, the Maharaja Yadvindra Singh. Mr. P.S. Rau-ICS was chief administrator and advisor to Raj Pramukh. Despite a small reservation of seats for the PEPSU students in the early 40’s in the King George Medical College , Lahore , the PEPSU State was facing acute shortage of qualified medical doctors. Dr. Amarjit Singh, who was personal physician to both Raj Parmukh and the chief administrator & advisor to Raj Parmukh, was nearing its term in 1953 and got interested in this proposal to the extent that a positive decision to this effect was taken and implemented in a week’s time.

With a full administrative support from Mr. Rau and the Raj Pramukh, three new wards and separate OPD Block were designed and built with suitable modifications in the upcoming new Rajindra Hospital and complex. The equipment and furniture for the first professional teaching was procured and installed. UGC and Punjab University clearances and inspection was arranged and approval was obtained and the first batch of 50 students was admitted in the Sept./Oct. 1953 itself. The College building foundation stone was laid down by the then President of India, Dr. Rajindra Prasad, on 21 Dec, 1953 and the opening ceremony of the regular college building was performed by the then Union Health Minister Raj Kumari Amrit Kaur on 4 th Feb, 1955.

The pioneering team of workers distinguished with the credit of being associated with raising of the College comprises of Dr. Amarjit Singh, Dr. Jagdish Singh, Dr. Sahib Singh Bassi, Dr. Gurdial Singh, Dr. Ram Singh, Dr, Ramji Dass, Dr. Malik, Dr. Gurdev Singh, Dr. Bhim Singh, Dr. Amar Nath Malhotra. Col. P.C. Dutta was the 1st College Principle (2.11.53 to 23.10.55). Dr. Amarjit Singh was the 2nd Principle of College (24.10.55 to 12.4.67) & in the earlier years of the College, he was associated with the teaching of Physiology, Pharmacology, Pathology, & Medicine the Medical Students.

The 2nd batch of doctors associted with the early development of the college included Dr. Prem Chandra, Dr. (Mrs.) Prem Chandra, Dr. Sohan Singh Hayre, Dr. M.S. Grewal, Dr. Sohan Lal Sharma, Dr. Satwant Ganda Singh and still later on Dr. I.D. Singh, Dr. S.D. Khanna, Dr. R.C. Khanna, Dr. S.S. Jolly, Dr. Chandra Parkash, Dr. P.L. Wahi, Dr. I.S. Gill, Dr. R.L. Manchanda, Dr. N.D. Aggarwal, and Dr. Puri. The annual admission of this college was enhanced from 50 students to 80 students in 1956, to 100 in 1961 and to 150 in 1963. Post Graduate courses were started in this College in 1959-60. This College was affiliated to Punjabi University at conception, to Punjab University in 1963 & Baba Farid University of Health Sciences since 1999. Till date this College has admitted 6548 students (2054 women & 4494 men) & has produced to date 5955 Doctors, the remaining are still presently on rolls. This College has also produced 2256 Post Graduates in various specialties till date. A Dental wing to this College was added in 1956 & remained attached till 1990. Chest & T.B. Hospital , whose pioneer was Dr. Kushdeva Singh is part & parcel of this Institute.

SPORTS AND RECREATION

In addition to the vast grounds, our College now has a swimming pool also. The College Auditorium has been renovated after 50 years, with full financial assistance from Patiala GOMCO Alumni Association of North America.

LIBRARY BUILDING

College library has been shifted to the new building where an open auditorium once stood. A medical Education cell equipped with modern audio-visual aids has been set up in old library building including facility for Internet. Guru Nanak Keratoplasty Unit was added in 1969. The New superspeciatly and Emergency block, with the Modern Operation Theatre Complex was started in 1979. Cobalt Therapy Unit started in March 1985. Deaddiction Center was started in June 1996.
